Sony's Yair Landau discusses Hollywood, gaming industry convergence

The line between films and video games have become blurred in recent years as some films have video game tie-ins while video games get movie adaptations. Sony Pictures Digital Entertainment (SPDE) President Yair Landau highlighted the topic on convergence between Hollywood and the gaming industry in an interview with Gamasutra.

This was in relation to the emergence of more and more game-film crossovers, adaptations, and video game-stylized movies. Landau pointed convergence affecting the bond between Hollywood and the games.

Good examples that readily come to mind include movies in the box office like Warner Brothers' 300 and Universal Pictures' Doom. The influence of the gaming industry is very much felt in these movies' computer rendered imagery and striking battle sequences, much like in video games.

On the other hand, Landau also pointed out how Hollywood manages to influence the gaming industry as well with films like Saving Private Ryan, for example, inspiring such games as Medal of Honor (Playstation 3, Xbox 360, Wii) and Call of Duty.

The success of these said movies and games seems to spell even more film-game crossover opportunities in the future, said Landau. Yet according to him, we've yet to see a game translate well enough into a movie that truly does it justice.
